Adopted in 1992, replacing the flag used since independence in 1975. The blue represents the Atlantic Ocean and sky, the red and white stripes symbolize the road to progress, and the ten yellow stars represent the ten main islands.
The flag's design was deliberately chosen to distance Cabo Verde from its previous association with Guinea-Bissau, with which it once planned a political union.
