Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
The flag of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania features the state coat of arms on a blue, white, and gold horizontal tricolor. The quartered arms combine the symbols of the historic regions: a black bull's head with a crown for Mecklenburg, a red griffin for Pomerania, and a golden eagle for Brandenburg's former territories in the region. The bull's head (Stierkopf) is one of northern Germany's most distinctive heraldic charges, while the Pomeranian griffin is shared with the neighboring Polish voivodeship of West Pomerania. The flag was adopted following German reunification in 1990.
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Baltic coast is home to Germany's largest island, RΓΌgen, famous for its dramatic white chalk cliffs painted by Caspar David Friedrich.
Adopted: 1991
