Podkarpackie
The flag of Podkarpackie Voivodeship features a griffin on a blue field, drawing from the heraldic traditions of the historic Ruthenian lands. The golden griffin (sometimes depicted as a lion-eagle hybrid) reflects the multicultural heritage of this southeastern corner of Poland, which was historically part of Red Ruthenia. The name 'Podkarpackie' means 'Sub-Carpathian,' referring to the region's position at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains. The blue field and golden charges give the flag a distinctive Eastern European character that sets it apart from the predominantly red-and-white Polish voivodeship flags.
Podkarpackie is home to the largest wooden church complex in Poland and one of the densest clusters of wooden Orthodox and Greek Catholic churches in Europe, many of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites.
