Rhineland-Palatinate
The flag of Rhineland-Palatinate displays the state coat of arms in the upper left corner on a black, red, and gold horizontal tricolor — the national colors of Germany. The arms feature a red shield with a golden wheel for the Electorate of Mainz, a white cross on red for the Electorate of Trier, and a golden lion on black for the Palatinate. These three ecclesiastical and secular electorates were the historic power centers of the region. The use of the German national tricolor as the flag's base is distinctive among the Bundesländer, symbolizing the state's commitment to the federal republic.
Rhineland-Palatinate produces about two-thirds of all German wine, with the Mosel Valley alone containing some of the steepest vineyards in the world.
