Gascony
The flag of Gascony features a red lion passant on a golden (or) field, representing the ancient Duchy of Gascony in southwestern France. The red lion on gold derives from the arms of the Dukes of Gascony, which later influenced the heraldry of the entire Aquitaine region. Gascony was historically a fiercely independent territory whose people spoke Gascon, a distinctive variety of the Occitan language. The region is celebrated as the homeland of d'Artagnan (the real musketeer who inspired Dumas) and is synonymous with Armagnac brandy. The bold lion on gold creates a warm, martial design befitting a land famous for its swashbuckling reputation.
The real d'Artagnan — Charles de Batz-Castelmore — was indeed a Gascon musketeer in the service of Louis XIV, and his exploits were even more dramatic than those in Alexandre Dumas's novel.
