Saxony-Anhalt
The flag of Saxony-Anhalt features the state coat of arms on a gold-over-black horizontal bicolor. The arms are divided per pale (vertically split): the left half bears the Sachsenraute — the distinctive black and gold diagonal stripes of Saxony — while the right half shows a black eagle on gold representing the former Duchy of Anhalt, derived from the Ascanian eagle. A Saxon crown sits atop the shield. The gold-over-black color scheme distinguishes this flag from Saxony's white-over-green, despite the shared heraldic heritage. The state was created in 1947, dissolved in the GDR era, and reconstituted after reunification in 1990.
Saxony-Anhalt is where Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of All Saints' Church in Wittenberg in 1517, sparking the Protestant Reformation.
