The Senyera Valenciana, the flag of the Valencian Community, consists of four red stripes on a golden-yellow background with a blue vertical stripe at the hoist bearing the royal crown. The red and gold bars derive from the historic Crown of Aragon, while the distinctive blue franja (stripe) with crown was granted by King James I as a mark of royal favor to the city of Valencia.
The blue stripe with the crown on Valencia's flag is a unique royal distinction said to have been granted by King James I of Aragon in the 13th century to honor the city's loyalty.
