Helsingør

municipalitiescoat-of-armsshipmaritime

Helsingør's coat of arms features a ship, reflecting the city's centuries-long importance as a harbour on the Øresund strait. The ship also symbolises St. Olaf, the city's patron saint. The oldest known seal from the 14th century already shows a vessel.

Helsingør's Kronborg Castle is the setting for Shakespeare's Hamlet, and the city earned great wealth from the Sound Dues toll collected from every ship passing through the Øresund.
