The Montenegrin flag is a red field bordered by a thin gold edge, with the national coat of arms in the center. The coat of arms features a golden two-headed eagle beneath a crown, holding a scepter and orb, with a shield depicting a golden lion on a blue background. The design draws from the historical flag of King Nikola I.
Montenegro's flag is one of only two sovereign nation flags to feature a lion passant on the coat of arms shown on its flag, the other being Spain.
