Roskilde
municipalitiescoat-of-armsbirdwater
Roskilde's coat of arms shows a bird perched above a stream, surrounded by a wall. The water is canting heraldry — 'kilde' means spring. Roses were added later, first appearing in 1384. The bird may be an eagle, hawk, or guild emblem. Based on the oldest seal from about 1250.
Roskilde was Denmark's capital for nearly 500 years and is home to the Viking Ship Museum, housing five original Viking vessels recovered from the fjord.
