East Sussex

The East Sussex flag features six gold martlets (heraldic swallows) on a blue background, taken from the shield of the historic county of Sussex. The martlets represent the swallows that are common along the Sussex coast.
Martlets are depicted without feet in heraldry, symbolising a younger son who must make his own way in the world without 'landing' on inherited estates.
