The Spanish flag consists of three horizontal stripes of red, yellow (double width), and red, with the coat of arms on the left side of the yellow stripe. The red and yellow colors date back to the Crown of Aragon in the 12th century. The coat of arms combines the symbols of the historical kingdoms that make up modern Spain.

The Spanish flag's coat of arms includes the Pillars of Hercules with the motto 'Plus Ultra' (Further Beyond), representing Spain's discovery of the New World.
