The Croatian flag is a horizontal tricolour of red, white, and blue with the national coat of arms centered on the flag. The coat of arms features the iconic red and white checkerboard shield, known as the sahovnica, topped by a crown of five historical regional shields. The Pan-Slavic colors reflect Croatia's Slavic heritage.
The red and white checkerboard pattern on Croatia's coat of arms dates back to the 10th century and is one of the oldest state symbols in Europe.
Adopted: 1990
