regionscoat of armsbirdphoenix
The coat of arms of Central Finland (Keski-Suomi) features a golden firebird or phoenix with spread wings on a blue field. The mythical bird symbolizes renewal and the Finnish spirit of sisu (determination). The blue background represents the region's abundant lakes. Central Finland is home to Jyvaskyla, the largest city in the Finnish Lakeland, and is known for its educational institutions and forest industry.
Central Finland's capital Jyvaskyla is known as the 'Athens of Finland' because of its many educational institutions, and the city contains more buildings designed by Alvar Aalto than any other city in the world.
