South Savo

regionscoat of armsbullblack

The coat of arms of South Savo (Etela-Savo) features a black bull rampant with golden horns and hooves on a yellow field, with a golden crown. The bull has been the symbol of the Savo region since the 16th century and represents the agricultural traditions of this lake-dotted interior region. South Savo is known for having the highest density of lakes in Finland.

South Savo's capital Mikkeli served as the headquarters of the Finnish armed forces during World War II, and Marshal Mannerheim directed Finland's defense from this lakeside city.
