The Greek flag features nine alternating blue and white horizontal stripes with a white cross on a blue canton in the upper left corner. The nine stripes are said to represent the nine syllables of the Greek phrase 'Freedom or Death.' The cross symbolizes Greek Orthodoxy, a central part of Greek identity.
There is no official shade of blue for the Greek flag, and throughout history it has varied from light blue to dark navy.
Adopted: 1978
