Japan's flag, called Nisshoki or Hinomaru (Circle of the Sun), is a white rectangular field with a crimson-red disc at its center. The red disc represents the sun, reflecting Japan's identity as the 'Land of the Rising Sun.' It is one of the most recognizable and simplest national flags in the world.

Although the Hinomaru has been used as Japan's de facto flag since 1870, it was not officially adopted by law until 1999 when the Act on National Flag and Anthem was passed.

Adopted: 1999
