Modified in 2017 to add red stripes at the top and bottom. The green represents Islam, the gold crescent and star are symbols of Islam, and the red stripes honour the blood shed by defenders of the nation.
Mauritania added red stripes to its flag in 2017 after a constitutional referendum, to honour the blood shed by its soldiers.
