Turkey's flag, known as al bayrak (the red flag), features a white crescent moon and a five-pointed star on a red background. Red has been prominent in Turkish flags for 700 years, the crescent and star are traditional symbols of Islam, and the current design was standardized during the Ottoman period.
Legend says the flag's design originated when Sultan Murad I saw the reflection of a crescent moon and star in a pool of blood on the battlefield after the Battle of Kosovo in 1389.
