Adopted in 1968 upon independence from Britain. The red represents the blood shed for independence, the blue symbolizes the Indian Ocean, the yellow stands for the golden light of freedom, and the green represents the lush vegetation.
Mauritius is one of the few countries whose flag has four equal horizontal stripes of different colours without any emblem.
