Rainbow Pride

The six-stripe rainbow flag is the most widely recognised symbol of LGBTQ+ pride worldwide. Designed by Gilbert Baker in 1978, each stripe carries meaning: red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, blue for harmony, and violet for spirit.

The original 1978 flag had eight stripes including hot pink and turquoise. Hot pink was dropped because the fabric was commercially unavailable, and turquoise was removed to create an even number for dividing along parade routes.
