The flag of the Maldives features a red field with a large green rectangle in the center, bearing a white crescent. Red represents the boldness and bravery of the nation's heroes, green symbolizes peace and prosperity, and the white crescent represents Islam, the state religion.
The crescent on the Maldives flag faces away from the hoist (toward the fly), which is opposite to the direction of most crescents on other national flags.
