Red Crescent

The Red Crescent flag features a red crescent moon on a white background. It serves the same protective purpose as the Red Cross emblem and has been used since the Russo-Turkish War of 1877. The crescent was adopted by the Ottoman Empire as a culturally appropriate alternative to the cross symbol.
The Red Crescent was first used informally during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 but was not officially recognised as a distinct emblem until the 1929 revision of the Geneva Conventions.
Adopted: 1929
