The coat of arms of Västra Götaland County is quartered, combining the symbols of its four historic provinces. The first quarter shows a golden lion on a blue field for Västergötland, the second a crowned golden eagle on blue for Dalsland, the third features the golden crowned head of a woman on red for Bohuslän, and the fourth displays three silver stars on blue for the city of Gothenburg. This complex quartered design reflects the 1998 merger that created Sweden's second most populous county, encompassing the major port city of Gothenburg.
Gothenburg, the county's largest city, has the biggest port in Scandinavia and hosts the Gothenburg Film Festival — the largest film festival in the Nordic countries.
