The NATO flag features a dark blue background with a white compass rose symbol at its centre. Four white lines radiate outward from the compass to the edges of the circle, representing the four cardinal directions. The compass symbolises the common direction towards peace taken by the member nations, and the circle represents unity.

The NATO compass rose was chosen to indicate that all member nations are moving together towards the common goal of peace, with each point representing one of the four cardinal directions.
