Hong Kong
territoriesredwhiteflower
Hong Kong's flag features a white stylised five-petal Bauhinia blakeana flower on a red background. The flower is native to Hong Kong and its five petals each contain a star, echoing the stars on China's national flag. Adopted in 1997 when sovereignty was transferred from the UK to China.
The Bauhinia blakeana is a sterile hybrid that does not produce seeds and can only be propagated by cuttings. It was first discovered in 1880 near the ruins of a house on the shore of Pok Fu Lam.
Adopted: 1997
