Hela

The flag of Hela Province represents this relatively new province, carved from Southern Highlands in 2012. Hela is named after a common mythological ancestor of the Huli, Duna, and Duguba peoples. The province is home to the Huli Wigmen, famous for their spectacular ceremonial wigs decorated with flowers and bird of paradise feathers. Hela is also the site of the massive PNG LNG natural gas project, one of the largest resource development projects in the southern hemisphere.
Huli Wigmen spend 18 months growing their hair in special camps before harvesting it to create their iconic wigs, which can last a lifetime with proper care.
Adopted: 2012
