The flag of Central Province features distinctive traditional motifs on a coloured background representing the cultural heritage of the peoples living around the capital district. The province surrounds the National Capital District and stretches from the coast to the Owen Stanley Range. Central Province is home to the Koiari and Motu-Koita peoples and was the site of fierce fighting during World War II along the Kokoda Track.

The Kokoda Track, a gruelling 96-kilometre trail through Central Province, was the site of a pivotal World War II campaign between Australian and Japanese forces in 1942.
