Greater Poland

The flag of Greater Poland Voivodeship features a white eagle on a red field, derived from the historic coat of arms of the Greater Poland region. The eagle faces right (dexter) and wears a golden crown, recalling the legend of Lech, the mythical founder of Poland, who saw a white eagle against a red sunset sky and chose it as his emblem. Greater Poland (Wielkopolska) is considered the cradle of the Polish state, as this is where the Piast dynasty established the first Polish kingdom in the 10th century. The flag's simplicity and directness reflect the region's foundational role in Polish national identity.

Greater Poland's capital, Poznan, hosts the oldest cathedral in Poland — the Archcathedral Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul on Cathedral Island, where the first Polish rulers were baptized and buried.
