Kalmykia

republicsyellowbluelotus

The flag of Kalmykia features a yellow field with a light blue lotus flower at the center, encircled by a blue ring. The lotus — the national flower of the Kalmyk people — symbolizes purity, spiritual growth, and the Buddhist heritage of Europe's only traditionally Buddhist republic. Yellow represents the sun, the steppe, and the Kalmyk people's Mongolian roots, while blue represents the eternal sky (Tengri) sacred in both Buddhist and traditional Mongol beliefs. The Kalmyks are the only Buddhist people in Europe, descended from Oirat Mongol nomads who migrated to the lower Volga in the 17th century.

Kalmykia's capital Elista is known as the 'Chess City' because former president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov built an entire chess-themed village for the 1998 Chess Olympiad.
