The emblem is a traditional Mari ornamental symbol combining a cross with curved elements, reflecting the indigenous Mari people's pagan spiritual traditions. The Mari people practice Europe's last surviving indigenous pagan religion, with sacred groves where they perform traditional nature worship ceremonies to this day.
