Västernorrland

countiesquarteredfishtree

The coat of arms of Västernorrland County is quartered, combining the symbols of its two historic provinces. The first and fourth quarters display three silver salmon on a blue field for Ångermanland, referencing the rich salmon rivers of the region. The second and third quarters show a golden tree (often depicted as a fir or pine) on a red field for Medelpad, symbolizing the vast coniferous forests that fueled the region's timber industry. The quartered design reflects the county's dual provincial identity along the High Coast.

Västernorrland's High Coast (Höga Kusten) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is rising out of the sea faster than anywhere else in the world — the land has risen nearly 300 meters since the last Ice Age.
