The Ukrainian flag is a simple horizontal bicolour of blue over yellow. The blue represents the sky, and the yellow symbolizes the vast wheat fields of the Ukrainian steppe. The flag's origins date to the 19th-century Ukrainian national movement, and it was restored as the national flag in 1992 after independence from the Soviet Union.

Ukraine's flag is sometimes flown upside down in error, which changes the symbolism to yellow sky and blue sea, though this orientation was actually used historically by some Ukrainian groups.
