Shetland
scotlandnordic-crossblue-white
The Shetland flag features a white Nordic cross on a blue background, closely resembling the Scottish Saltire but in Nordic cross form. The design reflects Shetland's dual Scottish and Norse identity. The blue represents the sea and sky, and the white cross echoes both St Andrew and Scandinavia.
Shetland celebrates Up Helly Aa every January, the largest fire festival in Europe, where locals dress as Vikings and burn a replica longship.
