The current Afghan flag has undergone many changes throughout its turbulent history. The black, red, and green vertical tricolor represents the nation's dark past, bloodshed, and Islam/prosperity respectively. The national emblem in the center features a mosque with a mihrab and pulpit, flanked by sheaves of wheat.
Afghanistan has changed its flag more than any other country in the 20th century, with over 20 different designs since 1901.
