Northern Territory

The flag of the Northern Territory features a unique design that breaks from the blue ensign tradition. The hoist side has a black panel bearing the Southern Cross in white, while the fly side has an ochre panel featuring Sturt's desert rose, the territory's floral emblem, in black and white with a central yellow disc. The black and ochre colours represent the landscape and Indigenous heritage of the territory.
The Northern Territory's flag was chosen through a public competition and deliberately avoided the British blue ensign format used by the six states, reflecting the territory's distinct identity.
Adopted: 1978
