Azerbaijan's flag has three horizontal stripes of blue, red, and green with a white crescent and eight-pointed star centered on the red stripe. Blue represents the Turkic heritage, red is for modernization and progress, and green symbolizes Islam. The eight points of the star represent the eight Turkic peoples.
Azerbaijan was the first Muslim-majority country to establish a democratic secular republic in 1918, and the flag dates back to that period.
Adopted: 1991
