West Flanders
provinceslionheraldicblack
The flag of West Flanders features a black lion rampant with red claws and tongue on a golden-yellow field, the same Flemish Lion found in East Flanders. However, the provincial government often uses a version with additional elements or the full provincial arms to distinguish it. The lion represents the historic County of Flanders, one of the wealthiest and most powerful medieval territories in the Low Countries. West Flanders is Belgium's only province with a North Sea coastline.
West Flanders contains the entire 67-kilometer Belgian coastline and is home to the In Flanders Fields Museum in Ypres, commemorating the devastating World War I battles fought across the province.
