The flag of Ceará features a green field with a central yellow-gold coat of arms. The arms include a shield displaying a coastal fortress and a rising sun, surrounded by branches of cotton and coffee. Above the shield sits a star, and below runs a banner with the state motto. The green and yellow echo Brazil's national colors, representing the lush vegetation and mineral wealth respectively. The coastal imagery reflects the state's long Atlantic shoreline.

Ceará abolished slavery four years before the rest of Brazil, on March 25, 1884, earning it the nickname 'Terra da Luz' (Land of Light).
