Distrito Federal
statesarrowsgeometricgreen
The flag of the Federal District features a white field with a green rectangle at the center, upon which four yellow arrows point outward in the cardinal directions, forming a cross pattern. The design symbolizes the capital BrasÃlia's role as the center of power radiating to all corners of Brazil. The green and yellow mirror Brazil's national colors, while the white background represents peace. The geometric, modernist design echoes the planned city's famous architecture by Oscar Niemeyer.
BrasÃlia was built from scratch in just 41 months and inaugurated as Brazil's capital in 1960, designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer and urban planner Lúcio Costa in the shape of an airplane.
Adopted: 1969
