Gifu
prefectureskanjigreenwhite
The flag of Gifu features a white mon emblem on a green field. The emblem is a stylised rendering of the kanji 岐 (gi), the first character of Gifu, abstracted into a geometric diamond-and-cross design that is strikingly modern. The clean lines and sharp angles make it one of the most graphically powerful prefectural emblems. The green field represents the mountains and forests covering over 80% of the prefecture.
Gifu is home to Shirakawa-gō, a UNESCO World Heritage village famous for its steep gasshō-zukuri thatched-roof farmhouses designed to withstand heavy snowfall.
