The flag of Yamagata displays a white mon emblem on a deep green field. The emblem is a stylised combination of three mountain shapes forming the kanji character 山 (yama, meaning mountain), which is the first character of the prefecture's name. The three peaks symbolise the mountainous terrain that defines the region. The green background represents the prefecture's lush valleys and cherry orchards.
Yamagata produces over 70% of Japan's cherries and is home to Zaō Onsen, famous for its 'snow monsters' — trees encased in ice and snow during winter.
