Minas Gerais
statestrianglemottored
The flag of Minas Gerais features a white field with a red triangle at the center, inside which is inscribed the Latin motto 'Libertas Quæ Sera Tamen' (Freedom, Even If Late). The triangle is surrounded by a green wreath. The design directly references the Inconfidência Mineira, an 18th-century independence movement, and the triangle symbolizes the ideals of the French Revolution. The red, white, and green echo the Italian flag, reflecting the large Italian immigrant population in the state.
The name Minas Gerais means 'General Mines' in Portuguese, referring to the massive gold rush of the 18th century that made the region one of the wealthiest in the colonial Americas.
