Known as the Maple Leaf flag, it was adopted in 1965 after years of debate. The red and white colors come from the royal arms of Canada, while the eleven-pointed maple leaf has been a Canadian symbol since the 18th century.
The maple leaf on the flag has 11 points, which was determined by wind tunnel testing to be the most recognizable design at a distance.
