Known as the Stars and Stripes, the current 50-star version was adopted in 1960. The 13 red and white stripes represent the original colonies, while the 50 white stars on a blue canton represent the current states. The colors symbolize valor, purity, and justice.
The current 50-star design was created by Robert Heft, a 17-year-old high school student, as a class project for which he originally received a B-minus grade.
Adopted: 1960
