The Swiss flag is a white cross on a red background. It is one of only two square sovereign-state flags in the world, the other being Vatican City. The white cross has been a Swiss symbol since the 14th century and represents Christianity, neutrality, and democracy. The Red Cross emblem is an inversion of the Swiss flag, honoring its Swiss founder.
The International Red Cross symbol is simply the Swiss flag with the colors inverted, honoring the nationality of its founder, Henry Dunant.
