The South Lanarkshire flag features a double-headed eagle in red on a silver (white) field. The eagle is derived from the arms of the former Lanarkshire county council and represents the ancient province's strength and authority.
South Lanarkshire contains New Lanark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and 18th-century model village built as a utopian workers' community by social reformer Robert Owen.
