Malta

europebicolourvertical-stripescrosses

The Maltese flag is a vertical bicolour of white and red with a representation of the George Cross edged in red in the upper left corner of the white stripe. The George Cross was awarded to Malta by King George VI in 1942 for the island's heroic defense during World War II. The white and red colors date back to the Norman period.

Malta is the only country in the world whose national flag features a foreign decoration: the British George Cross, awarded for bravery during WWII.
