Aargau
cantonsbicolorstarsriver
The flag of Aargau is vertically divided into black (left) and blue (right), with wavy white lines in the blue half representing the River Aare, and three white stars in the black half. The design was created in 1803 when the canton was formed during the Napoleonic Mediation. The stars represent the three merged districts, and the wavy lines reference the Aare River that gives the canton its name.
Aargau is known as the 'canton of castles' — it is home to the Habsburg Castle, the ancestral seat of the House of Habsburg that would go on to rule much of Europe.
Adopted: 1803
