Adopted in 1906, the flag features blue, white, and red horizontal stripes. The blue represents the sky and opportunities, white stands for peace, and the red central stripe (twice the width of the others) symbolizes the blood shed for freedom and the warmth of the people.

The flag was inspired by the French Tricolore, redesigned by First Lady Pacífica Fernández Oreamuno in 1848 to add the red stripe.
